New Mother Assistance/Maternal Infant Health Outreach Worker (MIHOW)

The MIHOW program began in 1994 with the help of the Center for Health Services at Vanderbilt University. Vanderbilt partners with us providing training for our MIHOW manager on prenatal care and infant development in order to reduce the risks facing children of poor, stressed, or geographically isolated families.

The MIHOW program works with expectant mothers and their children through the age of three. We make sure the expectant mothers receive prenatal care and skills for parenting. Once the baby is born we make well-baby visits and do evaluations to make sure that the baby is developing properly. Through donations a baby pantry is available to provide needed assistance for families in the program.

May 8, 2009 Henderson Settlement MIHOW program received accreditation from the Center for Health Services of Vanderbilt University after completing the process. This was a great achievement for us and we passed with flying colors. We met or exceeded all the standards of practice for sponsoring agencies. We demonstrated our ability to meet basic needs using the strength based approach, and now connect families with necessary services and encouragement to expand and develop their abilities.
